Light rays that are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. The filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops), this varies in accordance to how the filter is orientated to the sun or rotated. Both the PL (Linear Polarising) and PL-CIR (Circular Polarising) filters have the same effect, however it is important that the correct version is chosen for your camera.
The Hoya 82mm Linear Polariser Filter allows you to remove unwanted reflections and glare from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. It also enables better contrast by allowing colours to become more saturated and appear clearer. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds. HOYA's polarising filters do not affect the overall colour balance of a shot.
How to select the correct Polarising filter:
Cameras today use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to split the light entering the viewfinder enabling it to calculate exposure and focusing distance. To give unpredictable exposure or focusing PL (Linear Polarising) filters can sometimes interact with these items. Unless you have a manual focus camera that has no beam splitter it is recommend that you choose a PL-CIR filter.
• All auto-focus SLR and certain manual focus SLR cameras require circular polarizers. Consult your instruction manual.
• This is a linear polariser. Not suitable for Auto Focus cameras. For these you require a circular polariser.
